Reading & Lectio Magistralis

Filed Under (Photolog) by Bibi on 19-07-2008

It took a lot of photoshopping to make these two pics somehow visible. It was really really dark that night and I was sitting not too close to the “stage”, so you can’t properly see the beautiful B.C. monuments :-(
But it gives an idea.

I used to go there when I was a child (and in some photoalbum I still have photos… taken in the daylight!) but I had the opportunity to go back there last Tuesday night, when Valerio Massimo Manfredi presented his book, L’Armata Perduta. Beautiful!

Awaiting for the new laptop spare parts

Filed Under (General) by Bibi on 18-07-2008

This post was meant to be filed under the “photolog” category because I wanted to publish those two photos I took the other night at the lectio magistralis. In fact, I can’t because I have no pc to process the photos, therefore they can’t be published. At the moment my laptop is resting on my desk at home, with various parts scattered here and there, in need of some open heart surgery.
It’s the second time that poor “lappie” gets unscrewed and opened. A few months ago it was to clean and oil the fan: burning-hot air was coming out of the air openings and I was risking a complete loss of data.

Now it’s a battery problem: basically I need to replace the auxiliary battery (the one powering the date and time, to be more specific) and finding Acer spare parts is a bit of a mission impossible. Having searched here and there for a few hours, I found this site, and they seem to have everything I need. Since also the dvd unit needed to be replaced, I took the chance to get a quotation for the battery, dvd unit and a bigger hard disk.

I got my quotation in a very short time and the price seemed fair enough, so I placed my order. They said I would have received my items within 3 days after the order had been placed, but now, after 2 weeks, I am still waiting. I wrote and asked about the status of my purchase and they were kind and replied shortly, saying there was a delay from their supplier :-(

Sadly, I’m still here with no spare parts and lappie starts getting a thick layer of dust. And as the time goes by, instructions on how to screw parts back on, start to fade away from my mind :-S

This is the car I need

Catching a cold in July

Filed Under (General) by Bibi on 16-07-2008

When I was a student (from primary school to university) summer used to be a month with hot temperature and the occasional storm. Autumn used to be the season for rain and cooler weather. Winter used to be the season for snow and chilly weather. Spring used to be sunny days and cool breeze with gentle rainfalls.

How come it’s the middle of July and there are 16°C at night?? And just the week before it was Sahara temperature all over the city? Remember when I used to complain about the air conditioning units being broken at work and me sweating on the desk? Now it’s more like “Switch it off, I’m freezing!”.

The result of this crazy weather is of course a runny nose and ice-cold feet… yes, in July.

Also, last night I attended a literature show at the open air. The scenario was great: excerpts from a book were read inside an ancient Roman plaza. The plot was dealing with ancient Greek battles and the background music added pathos to the stories. Around me columns and what’s left of this B.C. village. Above me only stars & sky (photos will follow).

Everything was perfect till the cold wind started blowing in my neck and of course I couldn’t help but started shivering.
I could test the heating of the car. It works great!

In July.

I’ve just come and you’re already gone.
A quick hello and a sudden farewell.
You won’t be forgotten.

Micio-Gatto the one and only

Filed Under (General) by Bibi on 09-07-2008

Micio-Gatto is on holiday, the lucky being! While I’ve been sweating at home and esp. at work because the whole air-conditioning system has been out of order for more than one week (the hottest week, of course), he has been enjoying cool breeze and fresh air of the hills around here. With a sleeping-eating routine I’m very envious about.
Last night I drove up to his Summer resort, not comfortable at all on those very curvy, narrow, up&down mountain roads and he was there, waiting to jump out of his bed to welcome his master… and eat.
After his evening meal and a slow walk in the garden (slow like, snails were zooming past him), we drove back to the city, the much hotter city.

After 2 minutes of driving I saw a policeman crossing the road in front of me and waving a torch. I guess he meant “pull over”?? So I did and I got my driving license and car documents checked. The whole process made me quite uncomfortable…. Anyway, there was no problem and I could leave after a few minutes.

How come that Ale has been driving for 18 or so years and never got stopped and I have been having this car for about 3 weeks and already got checked?? Is this fair??

Despite the 300 km already marked on the car clock, I still don’t have that love towards driving that most people I know have. The question is: will I ever get it? I am eagerly awaiting for this shower of love to pour on me.

Going on a permanent hiatus (?)

I’m anticipating what could be my next decision: Jotted Lines might be sentenced to death in the next few days…
